Estimated Shots Per Fill
Actual shot count depends on your marker efficiency, firing mode, temperature, regulator settings, and fill quality, but here are general estimates for most paintball setups:
-
13ci / 3000 PSI – Approx. 180–300 shots
Compact capacity ideal for pistols, pump markers, magfed, and lightweight tactical builds -
26ci / 3000 PSI – Approx. 350–550 shots
Balanced compact setup with more usable air capacity for scenario and magfed play -
48ci / 3000 PSI – Approx. 600–900 shots
The most practical all-around option for recreational and beginner paintball setups
Pro Tip: If this is your first HPA tank and you are not specifically building a compact magfed or pistol setup, the 48ci / 3000 PSI is usually the best starting point.
Shot count estimates will vary depending on marker type, weather conditions, firing mode, regulator tuning, and air fill quality.
Why Upgrade from CO2 to HPA?
Compressed air systems (HPA) provide more consistent performance than CO2 because they maintain stable pressure across varying temperatures and firing speeds.
- More consistent velocity
- Improved accuracy and shot consistency
- Better cold-weather performance
- Reduced pressure spikes during rapid fire
- Recommended or required for many electronic paintball markers
Important Tank Shipping Notice
ALL paintball tanks ship EMPTY to comply with Department of Transportation safety regulations and must be filled prior to use.
Paintball HPA tanks require high-pressure compressed air fill equipment rated for 3000 PSI systems. Standard home or shop air compressors cannot properly fill paintball HPA tanks.
Find Local HPA Tank Filling Services 🗺️
Most players fill compressed air tanks at:
- Paintball fields
- Local paintball stores
- Sporting goods stores
- SCUBA and compressed air service shops
Need help finding a fill station?
Use our HPA Fill Finder before game day.
Always call ahead to confirm fill availability and pressure support (3000 PSI / 4500 PSI).
How to Read Your Tank Hydro Date
Every paintball HPA tank includes a stamped manufacture or hydrostatic test date on the tank bottle. This date is commonly called the “hydro date.”
- Example: 03 ◇ 25 = Manufactured or tested in March 2025
- Aluminum HPA tanks typically require hydro testing every 5 years
- The stamped date is NOT the expiration date
Tanks that are out of hydro may not be filled by paintball fields or fill stations until they are re-tested.
Fresh hydro dates are guaranteed on all new Maddog HPA tanks. Expect tank dates within up to 1 year of their manufactured date.

Need to Carry Your Tank on Your Back?
Pair your HPA tank with a remote coil line and tank-carry harness to improve balance and reduce front-heavy marker feel during longer games.
- Moves tank weight off your marker
- Improves comfort during scenario and woodsball play
- Works great with 4+1 and 6+1 harness systems
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Maddog HPA tanks ship filled?
No. All compressed air paintball tanks ship empty and must be filled before use.
Which tank size should I choose?
Choose 48ci for most beginner and recreational setups. Choose 26ci for compact tactical setups. Choose 13ci for ultra-light magfed, pump, or pistol builds.
Can I fill this with a regular air compressor?
No. Paintball HPA tanks require specialized high-pressure compressed air fill equipment. Standard home compressors cannot safely fill a 3000 PSI paintball tank.
What does the hydro date mean?
The hydro date is the manufacture or hydrostatic testing date stamped on the tank. Aluminum tanks typically require re-testing every 5 years.
Will this work with my paintball gun?
These tanks use standard paintball ASA threading and are compatible with most paintball markers designed for compressed air systems.
